Financial Literacy Seminars

The Credit Union provides complimentary financial information sessions and workshops to government employee groups and conferences across Ontario.  Delivered by one of our Certified Financial Planners they cover a wide range of financial topics.  Each session focuses on education and discussion, not product promotion.  Participants receive instruction and material to help them make informed financial decisions.

For many people, financial matters can be confusing and stressful, especially if objective, expert information is not available.  To address the increasing need for Canadians to develop sound financial habits and awareness, the federal government’s Task Force On Financial Literacy issued several recommendations, including the following:

"The Task Force recommends that employers incorporate financial literacy training into their current workplace training programs and communications. To that end, the Government of Canada, as well as provincial and territorial governments, should make workplace financial literacy programs eligible for tax assistance. Governments should demonstrate leadership as employers by developing workplace financial literacy programs for employees throughout their careers."

The Credit Union has been at the forefront of this effort since before the Task Force was established.  We have delivered numerous financial literacy programs to thousands of people and dozens of organizations across Ontario, including OPS Learning & Development, Showcase Ontario, the annual REACH Conference, TOPS and the Financial Management Institute.  Participants have responded very positively to these sessions, as indicated by the following comments from participants at Showcase Ontario 2011:

  • "I recently attended two courses presented by Ontario Civil Service Credit Union at Showcase Ontario and I enjoyed both of them very much!  The information is great, and so is the presentation!"
  • "I attended your Showcase presentations and found them to be very informative and relevant."
  • "I like the presentation at the session and believe the information would help me to look into the market."

Our sessions include the following topics:

  • Budgeting
  • Debt and credit management
  • Mortgages and home ownership
  • Life stage planning
  • Managing a financial crisis
  • RRSPs vs. TFSAs
  • Retirement planning
  • Education planning
  • Investing
  • Estate planning
