CU Tip: Too close for comfort? What to do if you're at your credit card limit. If you hold your breath every time you go to put something on your credit card, it's time to take action and get your credit card debt under control. Most major credit card companies will allow you some leeway to go over your limit, then penalize you with a $20 to $30 monthly over-limit fee - that's over and above the interest they're already charging you. If you've let your balance build up to a point that it will take several months to pay it off, it's time to look at some sensible solutions. Don't ask for a higher limit. Maxed out and making minimal payments each month means it's time for a consolidation loan. The Credit Union can help.
