Insurance Fraud

It’s become a business that costs us all!

While the majority of Canadians are honest, law-abiding citizens, unfortunately some deliberately try to "beat the system" by inflating or falsifying insurance claims. Billions of dollars are lost each year by what these thieves consider a "victimless" crime. The theft is occurring in automobile repair centres, medical clinics, law offices and even the next-door neighbour's house. The crime is insurance fraud.

Who commits insurance fraud?

Insurance fraud perpetrators are auto mechanics who inflate costs or do extra repairs, medical practitioners who bill for services not rendered, or individuals who conspire to stage auto accidents or fake injury.

Who pays for insurance fraud?

Insurance crime costs you - along with insurance companies, policyholders, taxpayers and the general public. Insurance fraud results in higher insurance rates, higher taxes and inflated prices for consumer goods and services. Insurance crime affects everyone. When a car is stolen, a home burglarized, property vandalized or a false or exaggerated claim made, everyone has to pay more than they should for insurance.

Insurance fraud is a crime

To report incidents of suspected insurance fraud contact The Insurance Bureau of Canada at www.ibc.ca/tips.asp or call 1-877-IBC TIPS, confidentially 24/7.
