News for Winter Travellers - Make your trip worry-free “I’m traveling south this winter
and plan to stay a few months. Are there any considerations I should
make before I leave?” Sam, if you’re traveling for extended periods during the winter months there are a few considerations. Unplanned power outages and lower household temperatures in winter months could result in frozen water pipes. If this results in burst water pipes, your insurance may not cover any loss or damage. Either shut off the water supply completely and drain the pipes or have a reliable person enter your home daily to make sure the heat is maintained. Having a person enter your home regularly will also help to make your home look “lived in”. While your insurance does cover property damage / theft while you’re away, you don’t want to extend an open invitation to burglars or thieves. Also, remember to:
Driving south? It’s a good idea to inform your insurance company about your plans. While your auto insurance policy is valid throughout North America, traveling with your car may change your material risk rating. For example – if you normally drive in rural Canada, but take your car to Fort Lauderdale, the chance of loss occurring is greater and the consequences more severe from a liability standpoint. This could complicate any claim you may have while away. Understand your risk – plan ahead and enjoy your trip!
