Retrofitting for big savings

Retrofitting means upgrading a house to keep the heat in. And in these days of high energy costs, retrofitting will not only provide you with yearly savings on your gas or electric bills, it will also make your home more attractive to future purchasers.

Here are some major retrofitting opportunities identified by Natural Resources Canada:

  • Air leakage control – weather stripping and sealants will stop drafts, save money and protect the structure of your home.
  • Insulate an empty wall frame – it makes a difference when you blow in insulation to fill the cavity.
  • Insulate the basement – Basements are areas of significant heat loss in many houses.
  • Complete heating system tune-up – have an expert analyze and correct any problems with the furnace or boiler. Better still, upgrade to a high-efficiency model for substantial savings.
  • Insulate a poorly insulated attic – If there is less than 15 cm of insulation in the attic, it will be worthwhile putting more in.

If retrofitting is on your "to do" list, now’s the time to talk to The Credit Union about low rate financing. It’s a smart investment that will help you save money in the years ahead as well as increase the value of your home.
