What is that smell?
Natural gas is one of the world's safest sources
of energy. However, it is highly flammable and, like any burning fuel,
can produce carbon monoxide. Did you know that natural gas in its’
usual form is colourless, odourless and non-poisonous? They actually
add an odourant called mercaptan to make natural gas smell like rotten
eggs so that even the smallest amount of natural gas is noticeable.
If you smell gas, do not:
- Use your telephone or cell phone in the
area where you smell gas.
- Turn any electrical appliances, switches
or computers on or off.
- Smoke or use lighters or matches.
- Start any motors or vehicles near
the area.
If you are indoors:
- Open the doors and windows to let fresh
air into the rooms.
- Call your gas company’s emergency
number immediately from a neighbour’s phone or a cell phone
that is away from the smell of gas.
- If you hear a “hissing” noise,
leave the building immediately, leaving the doors and windows open.
Call your gas company from a safe location.
If you see a gas fire:
- Call your local fire department or 9-1-1.
- Do not attempt to put out the fire yourself.
- Never pour or spray water on burning gas.
