Going on vacation?

If you leave your home unoccupied:

  • Make sure to lock all doors and windows, including the garage and shed doors, which, like patio or sliding glass doors, are common points of entry for burglars.
  • Leave your keys with a person you trust. Ask them to regularly visit your home and collect all delivered items (mail, newspapers, fliers, etc.).
  • Leave them a telephone number where you may be reached should an emergency occur.
Set your alarm system and inform the central monitoring station of your absence.
  • Temporarily discontinue home deliveries (newspapers, mail, etc.).
  • Refrain from mentioning the date of your next trip or vacation in public places. Some burglars often plan their activity from information gathered in such places.
  • Avoid leaving exterior or interior lights on during the day since they are obvious signs that you're not home. Use and set timers so that the lights and radio are turned on or off at their usual time.

If you use your car while on vacation

Before you hit the road, you should get your car checked and serviced by a qualified professional. Not only does getting your car serviced require little of your time, but you could also save yourself considerable headaches!

... To the U.S.

Since car insurance laws in the United States are different from ours, it is essential to check whether your current policy provides you with adequate coverage before travelling to the United States.

Don't forget to inform your insurer if your stay in the United States is longer than 60 days to ensure that you are adequately insured.

If you are renting a car be careful! Car-rental companies provide certain types of coverage which you may already have under your own car insurance policy. If you feel that the level of coverage provided by your insurance company is adequate, you're in no way obligated to purchase the insurance provided by the rental company.

If you have purchased this special coverage from The Personal: the coverage will display in the endorsement section of your certificate of insurance. When renting a vehicle, you will be required to present a copy of your certificate of insurance verifying to the car-rental company, that you have adequate coverage (check your policy to see what conditions are related to the rental vehicle weight and its maximum value).

Before signing a car-rental agreement, it is important that you carefully read and completely understand this agreement, in addition to knowing the provisions of your own auto insurance policy. Enjoy your vacation!
